I'm puzzled by the armor worn by King Herod. It looks perhaps Hellenistic - a metalic chest piece coupled with a fabric abdominal piece :? It's like the reverse of the armor seen worn by Alexander from the Pompeii fresco.

The pteruges are interesting. They feature a horizontal line running across the bottom edge.

I noticed the crests, but was more intrigued by the use of colour! I guess that puts us back in the nut roll of artistic license versus realism. Still. I think a certain amount of realism was expected from the artist that created the mosaics. He also varied the soldiers cloak colors but the shields look pretty much the same. Just my observation.

I noticed the rectangular shapes but looked closer and saw that they're just the corners of the backrest on the throne

There isn't a single shield depicted in any of these photos, afaik.
