So being somewhat skeptical of most 'ghost' sightings, but having some odd occurrences myself, I started posting at a supernatural phenomena forum, and got some viewpoints, etc, on these events.

However then I decided to post and see about something; I mean, you hear of Ghosts of Gettysburg, or the English Civil War, etc, etc; but what about Rome? I've never heard a ghost story involving a legionary.

In response to my question that boiled down to "what's the age limit for ghosts," and bringing up my Roman example, one fellow that moderates the place told me that he's heard of Roman ghosts [though with hollywood, I don't know how anyone would see a Roman soldier and know it... they'd think he was Greek (early), Barbarian (Comitatus), or just guess lucky I suppose]

Anyhow, this brings me to a curious point-

There have been sightings of a ghost company at Gettysburg... imagine spending the night in the Teutoburg Wald and seeing apparitions of even just one century, or something.

Can you imagine the rush?! Not to mention, if they were well manifested, and you kept your nerve, you could get answers to all the questions about the era's legions and their equipment!!! That is, if you weren't written off as a looney and committed first Tongue

Pliny the Elder apparently had a similar experience.

Go here. Never underestimate the BBC.

Wasn't he dreaming of Drusus?
I read some about a Roman ghost legion marching in a warehouse in Britain (York?) in early 1900's.

The history ended when they dug and found a Roman Road where the ghosts have marched... Confusedhock:

Sadly, no more references. :? so probably it´s unttaceable....

You're quite right, Jona -- the dead general appeared to him in his sleep. Sounds spooky! Confusedhock:

great link, the video was interesting as well. I think that's proof that tunics were white? Tongue (as well as helms and lorica...)

@Iagoba:

That's very interesting indeed as well, if not able to be confirmed. If indeed there are "supernatural" apparitions and such, to be in the right place, right time would be amazing.

ALSO:

Upon looking at that photo, it appears you can see the shoulder segments of the Segmenta, and it's a bit too hazy to make anything else out, save that he's wearing a tunic but has no helm or shield; perhaps this is a frozen image of a Miles getting off duty, or, at the strict attention he appears to be at, in front of a CO? So many questions!

You may have even read it on this Forum as it has been posted before. I am sure a kindly Mod will highlight the thread.

The story is in fact well known in the UK and there are a number of web sites which tell the story of the Roman Ghosts seen beneath the Treasurer's House in York. I am sure there are even a few RATer's out there who have met and spoken to the man who saw them.

The soldiers were I believe apparently wearing green tunics and leather helmets and carrying oval shields. Therefore whenever the event is depicted in artists reconstructions or as a display such as shown in the 'York Dungeon' they look like modern day re-enactors, generally because they are. Therefore they are wearing white or red tunics , lorica segmentata and carrying rectangular shields....Spooky or what!

Graham.
All right, Mr. Sumner, 'fess up: who's spreading the rumor that the moderators are "kindly"?

Great link..though for some reason i find that image a bit fishy!!
For my 25th wedding anniversary I had a portrait of my husband as aroman soldier(His family tradition) the man who painted it had his father 92years of age visiting him. He told his son that when he was a child in York(Eburacum) England that one of them used to visit him but when he told his parents they got mad. I believe they exist still.
A group of soldiers marches through a celler in a pub in York, visible from the knees up only, digging later found a Roman Road a couple of feet under the floor. Apparently! Confusedhock: Smile
Yeah heard about them. Just think of being on the moors and running into one of them. I did A topic on ghosts somewhere here!and often wondered if those who are drawn to re-enact are not reliving a memory of a past life? Something to think about! Carole Pellizzari
Possibly......it is one of the times I feel more alive, when doing an event, or visiting certain ancient sites..... :o ? )
I believe it there is more to it than meets the eye.I started studying about Romans when I was 6-7 years of age. At some later point I was told I had a past life intrusion meaning that something was not resolved back then so it just keeps repeating itself till resolved. Who really knows Flavia aka Carolina
Thanks for your answers, Flavia. Of course, there are no real proofs of the "one life vs. past lives" doctrines that different people believe in. Some say that we live over and over in an endless "Kharmic Wheel" trying to make amends for past lives' errors, and others say one life, then either a) nothingness or blending back into the cosmos somehow, or b) one life then a face to face meeting with Deity, followed by rewards or punishments. Evidently, it's not likely that anyone will be able to resolve that, as those who go don't generally show up for supper later to explain to those of us who have stayed for the time being. Of course you know all that....

One thing is sure though, ma'am, is that we ask all members to include their real name in their signature (accessed through the Profile link at the top of the page). It's a rule with several good reasons behind it; would you mind terribly attending to that? Thanks in advance.
