Did the Romans use to put any kind of finish on a wood? Varnish, Shellac, etc.. to seal it up and protect it? Or was it just painted and maybe put wax over that to help it? Or anything else?

Linseed oil works great as a period sealer against water and adds a nice dark color to woods.
