I have started the process of making a pair of Mainz calcei. First off, I have modified a pair of wooden lasts that I purchased off of Ebay. I sanded the bottoms flat and reshaped both the toes and heels. The lasts that I purchased were a size bigger than are my feet so this gave me some material to work with.

Then after being satisfied with the sole outline, I made a duck tape mockup:

Finally I laid the outline of the duck tape out flat, traced around it and here is the cutting pattern for the upper. I added a lasting margin of 1/2 inch. Question for Martin, is this reasonable?

I have never before tried to do lasted shoe making, so we will see how this works out.
Keep us posted, bro, it looks like you're off to a good start!
Hi Lee,

you mean the pattern as such or the width of the lasting margin? Both seem ok to me anyhow. You can also compare yours with what I posted here.

Oh, and I would change those lasts so that you are able to take them apart, two pieces seperated somewhere around where the V-saped incision is. Otherwise you might have unnecessary difficulties removing the last.

I should of been more succinct. I mean the distance between the traced outline and the outer edge of the pattern.

The lasts that I have rotate about the V-shaped point.
Lee, keep your thread titles in english please.

I am on a journey to make shoes.
Funny, that's how I translated that title, too! Small world, eh?

If you want to be on the save side make it about 3/4 of an inch, especially around the front/toes.

Ah, ok, I can see it now that you say it.
