Wonderful reproduction but what color would the originals have been, red or white? (Ducks and runs!)

What about little eagles printed all over them- or busts of the Emperor?

Linen is definitely the good choice- wool would be no fun at all...

Make them in white, print the eagles in red, and the war is over, no?

Or maybe with one strip down the middle... something in a burnt sienna perhaps...
