What got me interested in Roman warfare was Rome Total War, or rather more interested than I was, so I joined this web site. How many out there play RTW and how do they feel the accuracy of the game is, bearing in mind it is a game, but does it "feel" right or rather do the battles "feel" right? Just wondering what the prevailing opinion of you hard core Roman Historians out there was on this particular game.

Check out Rome: Total Realism

It's a set of mods to make Rome: Total War more realistic. It's existance should give you an idea of how realistic (or not) RTW is.
Ave Zemke. There are a number of good mods that build on RTW. Currently I am working through Roma Serrectum having spent months on Rome Total Realism Platinum. There are several others which this site mentions across a number of threads.

Realistic? None of us were there so how do we know? Most accounts are very formal and really do not go into great detail. What these RTW mods are doing is trying to get the look and type of soldiers accurate. Clearly light cavalry will not take a phalanx head-on, that's obvious but the real nuances of ancient warfare are lost in time.

In many cases the actual locations of battles are unsure so serious discussion about the effect of the terrain can be difficult and is usually limited to principles. Every now and again we get a detailed account which really does give us detail then that's it for a few hundred years in time.

But hey, these are games we are playing and if I can 'out Caesar' Caesar, I am a happy man.

Download RTR and go for it!

my first impression of the europa barbariorum mod is: good!
The Total Realism mod is excellent and really improves the game. Thanks to anyone who has worked on these mods giving enjoyment to so many people.
mmh going to try that mod out...
Yep the Rome Total Realism mod dramatically enhanced the gameplay both on and off the battlefield, and there are a fair number of mods available for RTW that focus on specific eras (The First Triumvirate being just one example).
Its all WIP so expect a few more gems from the RTW mod community.
I also read somewhere that in the states the RTW engine was used as an educational tool to encourage rather wayward schoolkids to take more of an interest in ancient history....RIGHT ON!!

....hello everyone,my first post. Big Grin
RTR is my only mod, as the others refuse to play with me.
Has anyone played the RTW 'Alexander" expansion pack? If so what historic battles are available on it.

Antonius Opilio - AKA Tony O'Morda
I buyed Total War: Eras (RTW BI ALEX) a couple months ago... pretty interesting.
The main campaign is ok, but a little bit short compared to RTW. The historical battles are quite accurate. I have played Queronea and Granicus so far (I'm still finishing Barbarian Invasion yet... ).

If you are an Valerio Massimo Manfredi's works fan, don't waste the opportunity of playing it.
please try INVASIO BARBARORUM
BEST LATE ROMAN MODS
I must agree with Alex, there. if you like the late roman empire, you must not give this amiss.

77bc is also a great mod to play if you're interested in the late republic:

I hope that was of help Big Grin
I recently reinstalled RTW and am now using the Europa Barbarorum mod. It. Is. Awesome. 'Nuff said!

The sights, sounds, and gameplay additions are absolutely fantastic, and add great depth to the ancient feeling that vanilla RTW is sorely lacking. I highly, highly recommend it.
If you guys are still into RTW, here in the not too distant future Roma Surrectum 2 will be released. We're currently wrapping up the Romans, and I think you'll be floored by them. We've really been digging deep in setting them up with as accurate equipment as we can. In fact I've been lurking around watching RAT for people's kit and input. Hopefully between Medieval 2 quality models, better textures, and a new unit recruiting model you guy's will approve of it!

Which reminds me, we're having some difficulty getting the late Republican era units. Who here on RAT would you guys say is a late Republic expert, ie 217bc era?
Wow! Burninator I didn't realise you were on here! *virtual high five*...ahem. Yeah, the new equipment is mind bogglingly impressive, and beats EB hands down really.

btw, is 217 late republic? I'd say it's early... 50BC ish would be late republic, wouldn't it?
