While looking for reasonable priced but accurate Roman armor and helmets, I came across cold cast helmets on the Nix Imperial website, and since I am not too knowledge-able when it comes to metals, is this a reasonable substitute for metal? Or is it accurate to wear for a Roman impression?
Sorry, Brother. It is not.

"Cold Cast" is epoxy resin with metallic coloration -- it is not metal.

I figured there had to be some catch.....Thanks
Nix also sells some electrotype items. This is a process very similar to electroplating, except that a rubber mold is used and the entire thickness of the items is built up electrically in the mold. You can get fantastic detail, and apparently Terry has gotten some molds from ORIGINAL helmets, BUT it's not forged metal. It's apparently reasonably strong, but I'm just not sure how far I'd trust it. And it's EXPENSIVE. Problem is, the descriptions on Terry's site are often vague, so he might say "metal" but you have no idea if it's steel, brass, aluminum, electrotype, or what. Probably best to give him a call and ask him outright--he's honest, just doesn't have the best website!
