At Bibracte Caesar kept 2 legions in the fort. They were not used in the battle. As the battle developed they culd have been used against the flanking enemy. Apparently they were not needed. Are there any battles known where the camp detachment left the fort, intervened in the fighting, and saved the already engaged Roman forces?
...the battle of Magnesia, described in AW 2 !! Smile

Though in this instance the 2000 camp guard were Macedonian etc auxiliaries/allies/volunteers....
