I will be leaving for eastern Turkey next Thursday. With a little group of fanatics who love to see all kinds of ancient history things. If I want to make a detour to Zama or Manzikert, there's no problem. And I know where to find those places.

BUT.

We will pass through the general area of the legionary base at Satala. I know that it's close to Sadağ (Gümüşhane province), but where is Sadağ? Does anyone have coordinates?

Thanks! (Photos will be posted.)
Lucky you! Confusedhock:

Yes, I am blessed, and I know it. My best friend and his girlfriend, Marco and Marlous, have started to appreciate ancient history and won't mind making immense detours to utterly uninteresting beaches places like Ahuan because Darius III was killed there or almost invisible castella. This time, some ten elderly people join us, who were also willing to visit desert castles like Bu Njem and Gheriat el Gharbia.

Still, now I must find Satala, otherwise they'll be disappointed!
Jona,

Are you trying to find a definitive location for the legionary base or Sadag?

Also, last time I looked Zama was in Tunisia Confusedhock:
Good luck!
Jona, do you have Google Earth? I found two Sadağ's in Turkey;

Sadağ kanyon girişi
Roughly N39.877 deg, E28.911 deg

Sadağ Kanyonu
Roughly N39.868 deg, E28.911 deg

They're about 0.95 km from each other north to south, 6.3 km south-east of Dundar, and 7.3 km south-west-west of Orhaneli.

I don't know if they're what you're looking for, though.
Why not ask the Mavors people? http://mavors.org/de/projects.htm
There it is!! Tongue P

Nice link, Jasper, are they going to put an english version on the site?
Replace the 'de' in the link with 'en'. Big Grin
Thanks alot  figured that was just a national device......
That is a great site, thanks for the tip, sorry to hijack thread too!!
Interesting temple mountain looks very artificial, bet there is a town of sorts buried under it!

Ahem. I meant Zela. Although my friends would go to Zama as well.

Obviously more than two; it is in the far east of Turkey, generally speaking in the area of 40 N and 40 E.

That helps a lot. Laudes added to your towering 630...
Ok, fellows: here it is, and it's easy to recognize.

Well - not much to see out there, but at least I've been there!! This is the eastern part of the southern wall. More photos from my trip here.
