Fires threathened the Olympis site...

Are all the Greek members OK?
I know, it's scary, they showed it on the lochal news all the way in chicago. Sad I hope everything, and more importantly everyone will be alright.
I heard that the fires are starting between the hours of sunset and sun up...

smacks of arson by land developers, as the land cannot be developed unless cleared of trees.

They have CCTV footage of two suspicious-looking guys..
I think thatt someone's gonna be in big trouble with the greek police
Over 60 people thought to be dead now. That is terrible.

Condolences to the Greek people, and I hope the perpetrators are dealt with severely. :x

I don't know how it is in Greece, but in the US, that's homicide, possibly murder.

Pray for rain. And for good police work to catch the culprits, if it is arson.
Well the issue is to nail them down.
But as the ancient Greeks said "Esti Dikis opthalmos" = the Eye of Juatise watches.

Well we survived 4000 years....we will keep survivng

Kind regards
You are right. Stopping the blazes is the first order of business. Determining if it is, indeed, arson is a distant second priority.

May God grant that no more lives are lost.

Yes, the village was destroyed, I heard. On the site only a few plants would have been on fire.
This is an image I prepared for our project site, showing the fires in western Arcadia as of yesterday.

The site was saved on the last moment but the firefighters had two victims.
Hope nature feels merciful and it will rain.
Its easy to despair. The true challenge will be restoration but nothing is impossible.

Kind regards
I just had lunch with a man who was preparing a trip to Greece and had discovered that his hotel in Olympia was destroyed...

Here is a photo of a forest fire surrounding the Akrokorinth, which I made last month.
Hello
I have been away for some days but kept following this tragedy that struck upon the Greek people.
I just want to leave my most sincere words of encouragement and comfort for all the Greek people at this terrible time.

I have two suggestions to put forward. I don't know how practical the second might be.

First, people are being killed, and homes destroyed. They are the first and foremost concern. Perhaps we can all donate to the Red Cross to help in this regard. Towards this, I will pledge $100.

Second, a forum like this naturally wants to help with the preservation of archaeological sites. Would it be possible for RAT to set up a fund to receive donations for this purpose? There is the problem how payments are to be made, and to what entity they might be turned over to. Perhaps an Archaeological institution. Perhaps someone can make a suggestion on this, who is more knowledgeable on these matters.

Anyone know if they've caught the cowards that did this?

If they do, anyone from Greece know what the penalty under law is for something like that, considering the deaths they've caused? I mean, to me that's mass-murder.
