Greetings, Just wondering what are some of your faviourite quotes in history. One of my faviourites would be

"Demcory is the worst type of government, but we've tried all the others."
Winston Churchhill

Funny and arguably true..

Anyways list yours Smile
"Evacuate -- In our moment of triumph? I think you over estimate their chances." -- Tarkin Imperial Govenor Outer Rim Territories

Narukami
Well, not favorite, but also one from Winston C., almost a century old but still very 'modern' :

"I do not understand this squeamishness about the use of gas. I am strongly in favour of using poison gas against uncivilised tribes."
(Sir Winston Churchill about the indiscriminate use of aerial bombardments and poison gas after a countrywide Arab rebellion in Iraq, 1920).
War is the father of everything! He made the Gods rise and from some made free and others slaves. Attributed to Herakleitos

War is our effort to impose our will on the adversary by all means possible.
Attributed to General Von Clausewitz.

One single nasty word that describes accuratelly biological human waist.
Attributed to General Cabrone at the battle of Waterloo.

Kind regards
"War is the continuation of politics by another means." Karl Von Clausewitz.
"It is tempting to close one's eyes to history and instead to speculate about the roots of war in some possible animal instinct: as if, like the tiger, we still had to kill to live, or, like the Robin Redbreast, to defend a nesting territory. But war, organized war, is not a human instinct. It is a highly planned and cooperative form of theft."

--Jacob Bronowski The Ascent Of Man

Narukami
Not a historical quote per se, but a quote about the nature of time and humanity:

"It is not always the majestic concerns of Imperial ministers which dictate the course of history, nor is it necessarily the pontifications of priests which move the hands of God." - Children of Dune

My favorite historical quote however, has to be the old standby:

"Fortes Fortuna Adjuvat" - Virgil
"Here, Caesar, hold my knife."
--Brutus
Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

Benjamin Franklin
Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.
Abraham Lincoln
"I am rather inclined to silence, and whether that be wise or not, it is at least more unusual nowadays to find a man who can hold his tongue than to find one who cannot." Abraham Lincoln, the last plebian President.

"He who is slowest in making a promise is most faithful in its performance." Jean Jacques Rousseau

"Better fare hard with good men than feast it with bad." Thomas Paine

"Avarice, in old age, is foolish; for what can be more absurd than to increase our provisions for the road the nearer we approach to our journey's end?" Marcus Tullius Cicero
For those who like Churchill quotes:-
"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile - hoping it will eat him last"
"Don't argue about the difficulties, the difficulties will argue for themselves" ( with reference to taking a complete artificial harbour across the Channel for D-Day)

...and some witty Churchill repartee:-
Lady Astor : Winston if you were my husband, I'd put arsenic in your coffee!"
Churchill: Madam, if you were my wife, I'd drink it.

...and my favourite,
Bessie Braddock: Winston, you are drunk !!
Churchill And Madam, you are ugly, but tomorrow I'll be sober whereas you will still be ugly......

Then of course there are the two quotes below...
pope John Paul II: "If someone had told me I would be Pope one day, I would have studied harder"

Homer Simpson: "Trying is the first step towards failure"

Bill Cosby: "There is hope for the future because God has a sense of humor and we are funny to God."

Buddha: “No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.â€
Quote: Homer Simpson: "Trying is the first step towards failure"
Yoda: "Do, or do not. There is no 'try'."

Quote:Napoleon: "History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon."
Pieter Geyl: "History is discussion without end."
"Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats."
