SCALES the fast way

Bravo Lucius! Laus for you, of course!

Simple, fine and effective, what more?
When you will have an idea about a simple, fine and effective way to home-make the central ridge on any scale, by simple tools too, don't forget to post it for us! Tongue

That's just wild Luc- I came up with virtually the same method this summer for Edge's Lorica squamata, save that I ultimately moved on from stacks of pre-cut scales and chose to bind ca. 30cm strips in stacks and drill the holes before cutting the individual scales. It sure saved a HUGE amount of time- great minds think alike I guess. Well done!

Not to hijack your thread Luc, but as an alternative here's how I made my scales:

Make one example scale, use that to lay out a strip template, bind a short stack of 6 strips with regular masking tape, tape the template on top, drill the holes, and then snip the individual scales off and shape (not shown). The short stack and long template alleviates the need for a special holder to secure cut scales firmly for drilling- vital since if the stack moves, the holes won't just be off, but the drillbit can become stuck and even break. If one uses a stack of strips that is only short, tape holds them just fine. It took me I think 4 minutes to drill all the holes for 48 scales.

That is an awesome idea. The size of the scale is very close to the size I want to make.I have been looking into getting mine stamped, machined, or cut by a laser. However, the upfront cost of getting them done even in mass amounts is pretty pricey. I was wondering, how did you get the wire nice and tight on the scale and what type of wire and thickness did you use.

I'm interested in this part, too. They look like staples to me.

Maybe an electric stapler was used ?

If so, that would be the quickest and easiest way to go about making a shirt, imo.

I know how you feel Magnus. I won't bother going through the long list of projects I still have to complete but I was unwise enough once before in my admiration of a certain gentlemen's scale armour to say that I would love to make some myself, with the result that there is a box containing several thousand scales at my scales at my house which I can't bring myself to look at now thanks to knowing how long it will take me to do the next bit - turning them into armour.

Well done Luc and Matt - lauds to both of you.

Thanks Crispvs, and absolutely that's the trouble- assembling the scales into rows takes a lot of work (very hard on the forearm to close rings for a squamata hour after hour, although the staples for interlocking scale is a whole lot easier), and then it was my experience that the major assembly of attaching the rows to the main garment and especially attaching leather edging takes a LONG time...

Maybe not simple, but I see that some jeweler rollers have half-moon shapes on them, so maybe there is a jig for creating a ridge on a strip of metal?

To put a ridge on my scales I am getting a Arbor Press and a die made to stamp the ridge into the scale.
