I just received a notice from Amazon that Paul Cartledge has a new book
"Thermopylae". I would imagine this to be good given his other ones. Anybody have any info on this ?
Also, I see a book by Adrian Murdoch; "Rome's Greatest Defeat: Massacre in the Teutoburg Forest". Any word on this or the author?

It's not new, it actually published about a year ago. It got quite good reviews and sold quite well in the book club that I was editor of at the time, but personally I find his style a bit dry and heavy-going so I didn't finish it. It is as much about the myth of Thermopylae and how it's 'meaning' to later generations as the battle itself, as far as I can recall. Just a couple of months before it there was another book on Thermopylae by Rupert Matthews (published by Spellmount) which I did read and which was much more about the actual details of the campaign and the fighting. Not sure I finished that either (bit of an occupational hazard) but remember enjoying what I did read and so probably worth a look.

Thanks Phil and Ross for the comments and review. I, too, find Cartledge a bit, how should I say, boring? His book on the Spartans put me to sleep.
