Recreating a Century at Corbridge 290509 Photo/Video Report
#1
In glorious weather yesterday 29 May 2009 at Corbridge as part of the Living Frontier events along Hadrians Wall a successful attempt was made to recreate a Roman Century including groups from the UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium and across Europe. A good many RAT'ers were present. For those that could not make it here is a flavour of the event with some of my photos

Looks pretty amazing! (and a great day to boot!)

I'm no expert in these get togethers. Is this a pretty large number for a reenactment? I'm very impressed with those numbers.

Anyone else have photo's/video/reports?

Thanks everyone for their positive comments

For Harris and Dudicus I have included more photos and a short video I put together of the event

On a personal note I had brought my Severan 3rd C gear to wear but rules and regulations together with no other 3rd C group being present prevented this. But I enjoyed the event nevertheless and it did give me the chance of seeing and inspecting the scale armour that Peroni sells through his Armamentaria website which I may consider sometime for my early 3rd C impression.

Thanks for posting the pics and the video.

I recognize some of my group. Big Grin

Too bad they chose this date for the event as most of my group (including myself) were unable to attend due to exams. :x

It reminds me of (a smaller version of) the event at Marle last year. This kind of mass events are great and I hope we'll see a lot more of them in the near future.

I am sorry you missed out on your groups visit to "de Muur van Hadrianus". I think the event date was chosen because it was the English schools mid term holiday week so as to maximise potential family visits to the event.
Perhaps next time the organisers will try to coordinate dates that avoid Belgian exam times !!!!. Anyway I hope the exams went well for you.

Here are a few more photos which I think are of your group as I recognise the brown shield design from the LegioXI C PF website. If they are not of your group let me know and I will change the photo captions.

Salve Fabius,

Thanks for posting those pictures.

Those are in fact our friends from the dutch group Legio X Gemina. http://www.gemina.nl/nl/index.htm

The soldiers of our group that could make it (only four, I believe) joined with the Dutch group for the event and you can spot a Legio XI shield here and there (but I also noticed some are using their old shields with a different design).

Our shields look like this:

I didn't know English school holidays took place at the moment. That explains a lot Smile

A really great weekend- working in an auxillary unit where there were various languages and the only common one being Roman commands felt very authentic- great bunch of people. Looking forward to the film of the final pageant as well...

Great photos. Thanks for sharing. 8)

I wish we had something like that here in the states. Sad

By the way, I have a question about Chris Hane's tunic(s).

Is Chris wearing a red under tunic and a white tunic over it OR is it a white tunic with red borders? Just curious since I like how it looks.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone who was present as a re-enactor knows the name of the proffesional photographer who took photos from 12 legionars (including me) near the scottisch border at Hadrians Wall ?

I would really really really like to get my hands on those photo's as the scenery and settings where great !
