Die Alterthümer unserer heidnischen Vorzeit, L. LINDENSCHMI
#1
Book I - III of "Die Alterthümer unserer heidnischen Vorzeit" by Ludwig Lindenschmit are available online:

Book I and II are available at http://books.google.com/

Book III is available at www.archive.org

"Die Alterthümer" contains beautiful illustrations of archaeological finds in Germany including Roman helmets, swords and pila, many of whom have never been otherwise published and have been lost during WW II.

A stunning series of books and instrumental in getting me going in military equipment studies back in the mid-1970s. Amazingly, all of the volumes (I think there were five eventually) were obtained for me on inter-library loan from Germany by Bristol City Reference library. Whilst most people (perhaps rightly) think of Robinson as the father of Roman military equipment studies (although I think Graham Webster should at least get a look-in), for me Lindenschmit was the first and best, particularly with his ground-breaking Tracht und Bewaffnung.
