Old RAT imported!
#1
Satsobek has been extremely clever and found a way to import a lot of both threads and usernames to this board. In other words: just login with your old name, should work!
However, not all user data was imported, so please update at least your mailadresses and location.
Greets!

Hi Jasper,

It's a shame for all that hard work, but I still can't log in under my old profile...
Anyway, I still see that I have 'only' 530+ posts of my 1600+ old ones left...

Also, I see many threads that were imported twice!

An addition to that-- the import script just gave everyone a default password and e-mail that it brought over from the old database. The password for everyone should be ***** (don't ask)

Log into your account and change your email and password to something unique as soon as possible.

Well, RAT v.2 is starting of at high speed Big Grin

Strangly enough though only 13 of my 78 posts at the old RAT were brought over. Not that I mind, but is there an explination?

Hi Hans,

Apparently it's a fluid thing. This morning I started off with 538 posts (of my original 1622), but at this moment I seem to have 502 left.
I guess it has to do with all the threads being imported and exported.
Many in the Round Table and Off Topic section are doubled and even trebled (!), so you might end up with more that you started with Big Grin

Caused by time-outs and otherwise not completely 100% stable script for importing. Importing reenactment and reconstruction apparently stumbled on a post with weird HTML in it on the original RAT. I'm sure Satsobek can tell you which so one of the mods at the old board could remove it.
Greets!

That is right... as we track down duplicate posts and delete them, your post count will go down. As we import new forums, it will go up. Hopefully everything will stabilize soon.

You can really help out by reporting any duplicates you find in this thread. Let me know which forum they are in and on what page so I can clear them out. Jasper has already done a great job of hunting down most of them, but a few were no doubt missed.

I'm better at the importation process now, so I shouldn't be creating anymore extra posts as I add forums in the future.

As for the password I used, it's a little of both. It goes well with the name and I do have a pet iguana... one of those folies of my younger days. It's amazing how long they live!

I'd like to add another disclaimer about the importation process--

If you are posting threads in a forum that hasn't yet been moved over from old RAT, there is a very strong chance that the new messages will either be deleted or moved to the last page of the forum when I bring in the old posts. I apologize for this, we should be all moved over within a day or so. In the meantime, I want to kepp you from loosing your hard-written posts! Big Grin

All forums that HAVE been moved are "safe" to post in... they won't be changing anymore.

Hi satsobek,

Will Civ Talk and Bloodsports (I mean Roman Combat Sports of course  ) also be imported, like Greek Army Talk?

my script is kind of limited in some ways- the problem with RCS was that the posts were spread out over several forums and I can only really migrate well from one forum into another, not from many into one. For this same reason, I managed to move GAT so well because most of the posts were concentrated into one section. Yes, my script could be better!

The official word I got from the powers that be at RCS (via Jasper) was that if nothing else could move, I should move the Websites forum, which I have done already.

It might be worthwhile to discuss if we want to create multiple forums for RCS or Roman Civ. That way, we could move over more of the messages.

The way I see it, we have complete control over this forum and it's content-- so why not create more forums... it's fast and free.. and breaking things down more is never a bad idea. Smile

Well, it's just my opinion, but the way I see it the other forums never really got off the ground.
Civ Talk, but RCS even more, never received such number of visitors to warrant their own separate forum. We could of course create new separate boards like the old ones, but from past experience I know that either one would receive far more attention as part of RAT than as separate boards.
And it's always easier of course to check new posts when they're part of RAT than when they're different sites.

But like I said, that's just my opinion.

What Christy means is keeping RCS a.o. on this board, but giving them more separate forums, like they had when they were 'independent'.
