I made my Roman subarmalis with a linen body that opened on both sides. I basically made it like a modern ballistic/bullet proof vest or like the cuirass itself. I made the front panel and back panel with a small overlap at the top and sewed them together. Then I left the seams open where the flaps would go and padded the shoulders more. I made the flaps out of two rows of leather, stiched the two rows of leather together and then stitched them into the subarmor. Then I simply used loops and strips of leather down both sides to close it. You could just have one side open, but I opted for both for potential weight gain with age. The stich and transition from linen to leather is hidden completely by the armor. One note is that the leather makes it rather on the heavy side. I intend to do the same for my Greek armor but with two layers of linen rectangular flaps with fringe, two rows of leather circular, and four rows of linen on the shoulders. Just some ideas. That's a wonderful picture of a seemingly great thorax! Do you have any idea why he used both hinges and rings? Is there any case the hinges, without the rings, open by themselves? I thought they would be held together by the stress...

Dimitri,as I told you,many thoraxes had both hinges and rings.More stability,I guess,and not so much stress on the hinges. pics of the whole piece,Gioi?

Also,I forgot to comment on it earlier.About the pteryges. The example you mentioned,from the Dodoni statuette,I'm sure you know it's much earlier than your cuirass.

You see double or triple rows.More difficult to make,but this is what the evidence tells us for the 5th and 4th centuries.For fifth century you can use two rows,while in the 4th they became three.Of course I'm talking about frequency and not for standard practice.
From vases,take a look at this.Single row is visible,but could imply two.After all,all linothorakes are depicted with single row,too.

Well... :oops: I have the linen in a nice, safe place. And some cardboard for a pattern.
Uh, other than that, my excuse is that I spent the summer in the hospital with my wife. Not a great excuse, but the best I have right now. :?
I've decided to try the quilting method instead of the glue, though. I'll keep folks up once that project gets underway.

I'm really sorry I've been away from this thread for so long. We have been having an exam session in school for the last two weeks or so, which has been taking most of my time. To answer your question Gioi, I haven't worked on my cuirass at all. On the other hand I've started my subarmalis (sewing is much easier to squeeze in between studying than hammering  ). I'll post some pics one of these days. BTW all those pics are just great! They'll be of great help when I start working on the thorax again.
Giannis: The reason I asked about the hinge-ring combination is because that is a reproduction and I wondered if it made any practical difference to the user. Thanks A LOT for those pics as well, I'm making the pteryges according to one of the statues'. Oh, I found Conolly's book in Athens, didn't have to order, and it's just great! Great load of info!

I think the muscled cuirass is the exact same M.Amt has in his site,and has been polished...It has better views that might help you with yours.

My cuirass was made by Steve Hamblind (UK) some years ago. It is an excellent work, but it should be re-worked to fit me better  cry:

GioiI just checked Matt's site.The cuirass is indeed the same,it was made by Exsekias Trivoulidis and owned by him.The helmet I'm sure it's manning,in particular this one

It is bronze and the finishing can be produced.Eduardo's helmet,I'm sure you remember,has a similar finish due to use.
The greaves are also from manning,the lining is exactly the same,appart from the general shape.
The cast helmet on e-bay was it this one?

The helmet I posted is indeed cast. A member from "The Phalanx" forum posted it. He said he made the mold from an original I think. He was trying to find an easier way to make such helmets to sell them.
