It had me going there for a while and as you point out David people do tend to make the umbo just a bit small, for the average guy when his fist is clenched is in the region of 4 to 4.5 inches wide.
Therefore when I have made an umbro I make it with a 5 inch diameter, and then to solve the problem of the shield falling back at it's top edge one can glue an inch thick block of hard foam onto the inside just above the umbo and this makes things more comfortable to carry and it also holds the shield away from the arm.
