Is the stitching actually functional or just decorative? Are there two layers of leather?

The stitching helps to stop the leather from stretching. Even earlier apron straps could have stitching running down the edges, and this has been found on definitely one near complete strap that I know of.

I wanted to make this belt from two layers of leather, but it would have been to thick with what I had on hand, So this one is just one layer of 8-9 oz leaher.

Stitching is functional, like Tarbicus have said, but it's decorative too. Some times is used in patterns, like the well-know exemple of a III century belt.

I would be happy if you could give an approximate time, that belt was in use. Something lite "mid 5th century", or whatever. Thanks!

That would help me to put your product which I like, by the way) into the proper timeline context.

Sven,
Paul's belt could be widely set in the last quarter of 4th century AD, though tehr is nothing against it being used somewhat later. Anyplace inside the Empire, East or West.

BTW, your artwork is superb! Confusedhock:

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.
