Mainz style gladius recreation
#16
Best of luck John. Keep us posted. If you want to do the Tiberius with a rounded point it's easy enough to do even without a drawing.

So as I was searching grip designs I came across this very complete sword. It looks to me like a Mainz blade but you would know more. I am thinking about using the whole design but in wood and with a bone grip. is it a Mainz gladius?

I have seen this sword before and also saw it described as a good fake. I don't know for sure whether it's fake or not. Any one else on RAT familiar with this?

It does look like a fake. The blade is too perfect and all that. Have you checked out the Albion Augustus? I think that whole thing is the closest to what I am looking for but I will use a bone handle. Does the brass plate have to be set in the guard or can it just be flush? The shape of the guard looks to be more oval than round in the case of the sword of Tiberius. (see small piece in the attached picture) Also does the pommel nut have to be brass or was it ever just the same material as the tang? I will be making the blade this weekend. Thanks for consistently answering my questions Jim.

Fake for a million reasons. Its been discussed before but i think the owner threatened to sue. So we'll leave it at that.

Stick to the obvious examples out there like the nice one that John posted.

I knew I'd seen that sword before and it was at the time discussed as being a fake. It's one of those "Too good to be true" things

The feature that is strange is how it only has three finger grips.

Today is the day. I will be making the blade today. I went to the local steel yard and got a piece of 1/4" x 3" flat bar. It was around $23.00. Pictures of the process to follow.

step 3: scribe the outline on the steel and check the dimensions against your design. Make sure to leave extra length for the tang ( you can't really add later)

step 4: Trace the outline in sharpie so it can be seen while cutting it out.
