Show here your Roman soldier impression

Great pictures! We want more!
What we see here is a picture of Aitor as he once posed for a mosaicist doing a big piece for a wealthy land owner somewhere nearby Piazza Armerina in Sicily..
How did the great hunt go, Aitor? I didn't know you were that old..
Titus that is a great shield, with the metallic thunderbolts. That seems logical, and I kind of remember that fragments of such metal thunderbolts wee found at Kalkriese.
The argument according to which the thunderbolts were not metallic because they would have been destroyed in a fight doesn't hold water since, in a fight, a shield is bound to be damaged, that what it's been made for.
However, maybe you should beat up your calone a little for not cleaning that lorica properly...
And the crest of that centurion is indeed very visible. I don't see anything wrong with that. That raises the question of what kind of feathers were used. Goose? Crow? Ostrich is almost certain in some cases.
What is see wrong are the pteryges though. We still have a problem with the pteryges.
And I am not so sure about the painted shield boss. I am more in favor of a silver/gold or a black/gold contrast.

Edited by: Antoninus Lucretius at: 5/14/04 1:40 pm

Aitor, I did not want to criticize anything! Yes, I remember that famous graven feathers crest on the tombstone (Dan has a crest so too, but red and smaller), but the feathers are very smaller. I was just amazed by its feathers dimensions, they look like the swan ones...
Here I've the opportunity to post a photo impression of Dan Peterson at Ostia:

Antoninus, I arrived at Vienne (France) for that event at the last minute, after 10 hours night driving, no time to polish or fix anything... That kit is from Dan's collection, not mine unfortunately, anyway that seg was the best I worn ever, it seemed tailored on me! And its "campaign" look was not so bad... That scutum is really fine: red leather covered too... A real beauty...
OK, this was a shot taken at a non-profit event Legio VI did recently, and wasn't actually meant to be cannon, but it shows some of our recent progress to date:

This uniform attempts to replicate the look of the Roman legionary from the end of the Hadrianic period on. The Imperial Gallic helmets have been retro-fitted with cross-braces, the new calcae boots (one pattern, at least) are worn, the cingulum apron straps are shorter than the 1st Cent. variety (often, when soldiers are shown wearing pteruges, there's actually no apron sraps worn at all). The armor is the new Stillfried variant of the Newstead pattern, which debutted circa 140 AD. I'm on the left, Diogenes (aka, Dr. Arik Greenberg) is on the right.

Future projects include slide sword scabbards, ring-pommel swords, and open-work belt plates and cingulum strap fittings.
Nice photo and good effort Darius! Even because the Adrianus/Marcus Aurelius period recostructions are not so frequent and the lastly updated Newstead segs too. We have in fact loads of early Empire till to Traianus impressions and several late empire ones, but there is a void from Traianus till Diocletianus...

Ok Jasper, I'll send you the not RAT members photos I have
Well, Antoninus, when in fact I was attempting to ape the Piazza Armerina mosaic was one year earlier

but we were in a hurry and we didn't grasp the correct positions.
I've found it a very comfortable way of standing. Of course, you need a long 'high ranker' staff, those of a centurio being to short for it...

Aitor

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

We all seem to start with that particular trouble. You need to have your photo stored online somewhere, that RAT can access it. Most of us use Photobucket. It's simple to use. Go to photobucket.com/ Just register and follow the simple directions. Then come here, sign in and go to make your post. You'll see a button labelled image on the left. Click it and it gives you a window to enter the url to your image in photobucket. I usually keep both windows open and copy/paste. If you've got the url correct, your picture will display. You can click preview, add reply, and have look if it worked, then add reply to post. You use the same technique to put a photo by your name, except enter the url in your profile setup page.
Avete Omnes,
This is my impression as it stands today. Not quite finished, but it gives the general impression of a mid 2nd century Legionaire. Updated Newstead pattern, Braccae (I'm really happy with these), retrofit cross braced helmet, the much debated pteruges, and full shoes. My balteus needs some updating- very old fashioned, cing. a bit long, crescents not so ideal with pteruges. Incidentally, I am using the Junkleman shield carriage here. I didn't think it could be made to work, but... very successfull. I intend to detail my experience with it shortly.
