BBC Photos : Romans marching in the streets of Rome
#31
Salve fratres,

It was a very nice experience indeed Big Grin

I'm glad I survived those five days. Until sunday evening I had a temperature of 38+°C. I was taking antibiotics but a lack of sleep and physical exercise slowed down the recovery I guess. In the evenings I was so tired I could hardly speak Confused

It was nice to meet Byron on saturday. We spend 12 hours non stop in armour that day and the temperature was very high. I resorted to wetting my focale and wearing it like a bandana, because otherwise my brain would have been cooked.

I wore my bearskin during the complete parade and pre-parade. As if a fever and the hot Italian sun weren't hot enough

You can see me and my group marching in this movie. We're the first group in the beginning that marches past. I'm the vexilarius with the red and white pteryges.

It was great to meet you and your wife too Ade!!

Andreas, you were on Camping Fabulous too? That's a shame, I would have liked to have met you! But like I said, I was quite ill and often only half knew what was going on aroung me.

I remember a little shouting match in the camping restaurant. It ended with the other group (Legio XX Deva Victrix, perhaps?) singing a very nice song. We'd like to have the text of that one so we can join in next time :lol

On of the girls of my group gave me the Fell boots Robin Brown made me. Sadly I didn't meet him in person. Sad

I'm looking forward to more pictures and especialy movies (because we have about 1000 pictures of the parade already Smile ).

Jef

Robin was there too!?

Hope you're feeling better Jef, you were looking a little lost on the Saturday when I met you! Definately a braincooker on Sunday, with all that gear on!

lol, well, we didn't know what we had to do. We had been waiting in the sun for a long time. We had to march to Rome from the headquarters of the GSR when you met me. We were asked to be present at the Vestal ceremony that evening. One of the Italians that would walk with us had disappeared and we had send out our Batavian runner to collect him. I had just moved apart from the group to a shadier spot when you walked past. I must admit that I didn't recognise you at first Smile lol:

Hi Jeff,

It was us, the Deva Victrix who were the noisy bunch in the restaurant but your lads certainly gave us a good run for our money.

Sorry to hear you were ill. A couple of our boys suffered similar problems but like yourself refused to let it stop them.

As you say it was frantic and a shame we did not know each other but a shared experience sometimes is a good basis to begin new friendships.

Maybe in the future we can meet up with you guys at another event, share a drink and sing the roof down.

Regards,

Gary.

Hi Gary,

That's a great idea, we'll do that Smile

Could you perhaps email me the text of the marching song you guys sang at the end? I've send you a PM with my email adress.

Good pictures Rita, it gives a good idea of the numbers involved!

BTW, who was the Late Roman who latched on to us at the Circus Maximus anyone?
The one who arrived late......and didn't march up from the Via Appia Antica?

Sorry Velite, but probably you have mistaken our Legio XIIII GMV from Poland with another group. I did not meet any legionary man from Portugal in Rome this day, especially from the Legio XIIII GMV Smile . What is the source of this list you wrote?

Dear Caesar,

Last Year also my group started from the Via Appia out the Rome walls, to arrive then the Circus Massimo. A rather heavy walk!
This year we have preferred to approach us to the place of start.

But Caesar, however for me was a great emotion to enter in Rome through Porta S. Sebastiano, and to march on the Via Appia!
What do you mean?
