This is my impression of a signifer from between 85 to 120 AD at the NIne Years war era star fort in Kinsale of all places
I know the coolus helm is a bit out of date to go with manica and greaves but I am planning on getting one of the depeeka krefeld helmets as well.

Nice gear. Is it made from brass/tin, or steel?

Latest addition in use: manica. I swear I'm not going to add more armour.

Quote:Latest addition in use: manica. I swear I'm not going to add more armour.Well, I'm not sure. Theres still one arm to go!!

Looking great Robert ! Any evidence of the later use of manica? I can think only the Adamclissi monuments...

Thanks guys!
Quote:Any evidence of the later use of manica? I can think only the Adamclissi monuments...The Notitia Dignitatum. As long as no-one can prove to me why it would have been in use for cavalry (or gladiators) only, I see no problem to interpret the manica as in (continued) use for the infantry. Quote: Well, I'm not sure. Theres still one arm to go!!Not likely! I have the scutum there, plus it's not incresing the agility of my arm movements! I can sctratch my nose and draw my spatha, but already holding the hasta becomes strained.

More later manica examples:-
- the 4th century column of Arcadius - Ammianus “Laminarum circuli tenues apti corporis flexibus ambiebant per omnia membra diducti.” (Thin circles of iron plates, fitted to the curves of their bodies, completely covered their limbs). - the Alba Iulia relief. -Iron manica found in Northern Britannia in 4th century context, written up by Mike Bishop This article may be useful (or not) http://www.romanarmy.net/manica.htm

Quote:More later manica examplesThanks Paul. The direct evidence is only of Late Roman cavalry use, but like I said, I see no reason why infantry would no longer use it. Quote:Hmmmm, your thighslook exposed, could do with some protection there..Let them. They all go behind the scutum! I won't be adding a gorget or thingh guards..

Well, you could just build a large iron cylinder, with 2 handles inside opposite each other, Then you wouldn't need all that armour !!
