Quote:There is a bronze for casting called "Ancient Bronze" as it contains no zinc. When zinc appears in bronze, it is usually referred to as "Roman bronze"

www.riogrande.com just down the street.... about $8.75 lbs.
I have about 7 or 8 lbs around the house. It has a "warm deep bronze color" and is less yellow than "Caster's yellow Brass" which has a zinc content. Use this for your roman stuff. Don't use '"white bronze". It has lead and is highly toxic in a fluid state. Most of the modern chemical content will differ slightly from ancient pieces, which has a wide variance anyway.
The best reference is R.F Tealcote, Metallurgy In Archeology, 1962, Edward Arnold Ltd. No ISBN. Out of print, of course. It may be a bit dated, but I don't know of anything more modern, and is principally limited to the British Isles.
Still a ways from a full shop... the equipment is not cheap and there are a lot of toxic fumes and chemicals. You need good ventilation. I can work in my garage about 3 - 4 months out of the year due to the ventilation issue. Either too cold, too hot, or the wind is too strong. But it is coming along...
