Melun Pugio help please?

Postby Martin Moser » Fri 27 Jan 2006, 5:16

Hi all,

does anybody know of pictures or sources for the pugio found near Melun in the late 60s (I think it was)?

I have

-M. Petit. Notes sur un poignard romain du musee de Melun. 1973/74.
-Jürgen Obmann. Studien zu römischen Dolchscheiden des 1. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. 1990.

Only drawings in there, unfortunately no photographs, and I would like to see the real thing ...

Thanks in advance for any help,

Martin
cheers,

Martin

Martin,

Do you mean the pugio found at Mehrum. If so I too have drawings of it but no photograph. Mike Bishop may be able to help.

No, I don't think thats the one (where is Mehrum?), I mean a

"poignard de fer, decouvert dans la Seine, a Melun, lors <<des fouilles du Grand Pont>> en 1869"

It's a pugio in its sheath, most of the handle is missing.

melun pugio

Postby maarten » Wed 02 Aug 2006, 15:07

I do not have any pictures, but the book of Obmann gives a good drawing. I have reconstruted the melun iron plate and am currently trying to fill the engravings with silver.

I will try to send you a picture soon,

Hi Maarten,

thanks for letting me know. I have the Obmann book as well as the original publication (see above), but would like to get a glimpse of the real thing. I tried to contact the museum, but never received an answer unfortunately. Looking forward to see your reconstruction!

I've tried several times to get a message and picture of the Melun plate on to the forum, but am constantly (after half a minute) thrown out (pagina verlopen). Can anyone give me advice how to stop being thrown out?

Wow! stunning work Maarten.

Can I ask, is it chiselled or acid-etched?

Thanks Robert for putting the picture on the forum.

As you can see I am new on the forum, but not new in the reenactment world. I am indeed Maarten from Artemisia and Legio X Gemina (Gemina Project) from the Netherlands. I've made a lot of reconstructions for our group, but the Melun daggerplate is my first try of a daggerplate with silverinlay. In the past year I've done some research on daggerplates as a preparation for an article on daggerplates from the Netherlands. So if anyone has any pictures of daggerplates (Netherlands and abroad (as studymaterial) please let me know.

As for the Melunplate, it's partly etched and partly chiselt (two times). Chisseling took about 20 hours. The silverinlay still gives me some trouble (it's an experiment). I'll let you know how it ends and send more pictures soon.

Hi Maarten,

thanks for showing your work, looks great indeed! I guess you'll beat me to it, I only just started with doing a few centimeters of the border for learning about the techniques involved before starting for real (I have been planning to do this sheath for more than 5 years now  ).

cheers,

Martin

PS: I sent you a PM about another topic
cheers,

Martin

Well, you will both finish sooner than me. I am still practicing on scrap steel to get the engraving technique right before trying to start on my own inlaid type 'B' sheath. I don't think I will be ready for the Melun plate for a long time so I will probably be doing one of the simpler plates from Chester.

Maarten,

I can pass on one or two sets of drawings of dagger sheaths from Britain if it would help you. Photographs would be more difficult as I have only a limited range and most have been sent to me by other RAT members or are freely available on the Exploratio site. If you would like any drawings from Britain let me know.

Dear Crispus ( and others,)

Thanks for the offer to send me drawings or pictures. I will send you my email.

As fo my experiment, I will try to put a picture of the scabbard on the forum in its current state (better, but still not satisfactory)
