Roman Names and Auxillary Names Expanded?

Legio XX and Legio VI have a great list of purely Roman Names.

Is there an expanded list of Roman names that anyone has found as well as for Auxiliaries? I believe some took Roman names or partial Roman names.

Gaul/British/Celtic?

I am just looking to fine tune my impression of an Auxiliary.

yes, nearly all took roman names, or partially roman names. when a foreign piece is used it is in this form:

praenomen-- nomen --cognomen is foreign


look at tombstones, and diplomata.

Bassus
vindex
menander
asper (probably more an adjective in latin)

any provincial name, but often they were romanised, I will get you more info shortly.

Matthew Amt, in his web page, talks about a Thracian auxiliary called Bassa, that romanized his name as Titus Flavius Bassus.

the names were 9 times from 10 romanized in some way.

Titus Flavius Bassus more than likely took his names from the emperor at the time , Titus.

Likewise my persona. (Marcus Ulpius Peronis) This praenomen and nomen was taken from the emperor at the time he received his diploma which was Trajan.

If I made in Auxilla Impression and say the trooper was from the Spanish city of Italica would this be a correct name?

no, it is not, very rarely were people named after places, and you have that in the feminine, used for place names often.

that is most likely why bassa would have changed his name to bassus, bassa is feminine, on the other hand, names like Agricola are not feminine even though they have feminine endings, because they are occupations.

if anything I would use ITALICUS, but that is not accurate either, you just do not see too many men named after birthplaces.

give me your month of birth, or the number in which you were born (i.e. first child, second child etc.) and I can make a proper entirely roman name, or you can look at some stelae of men in spanish cohorts, or from spain.

a proper celtic name may be gleaned from some stelae.

Yes, John is right, I took my cognomen FAVENTIANVS from my hometown name: COLONIA IVLIA AVGVSTA FAVENTIA PATERNA BARCINO, for the Barcinonenses were also known as FAVENTIANI.
