What event had the biggest impact on your country
#16
Wilde absolutely had an amazing wit; the quote is clearly true on some levels, false on others and offensive on yet still others (like so much of Wilde's famous one-liners).

The problem with American Football is that it does too much to damage our academics: combining athletics and academics can do great things for school spirit, yes, but when the "tale starts wagging the dog" the primary mission of both the athletic endeavor and the academic endeavor suffer. Thus, football (and basketball too) have become often more "spectacles" than sports. Note also that the "big 2" American sports are ones that favor fairly extreme body types (the ultra-big football player and the ultra-tall basketball player), which, again, make them more of a spectacle than a sport that encourages fitness in the general public. So the problem imho has become a lack of perspective on the part of fans on numerous levels.

btw, on the "football hooligan" line, it isn't so much an "identifiable" group in the US, like the "British football hooligan" (though I suppose that may be an unfair stereotype, I don't know enough about the British scene)... but the "ritual" of tearing down the goalposts after a particularly big win, for example, has been fairly hard to eliminate.

As to whether football is more organized, it depends on the level. At the professional level, it probably is. The National Football League (NFL to pretty much any American) has a tightly controlled and regulated monopoly, so much so that lately it's been difficult for any one team to produce a new "dynasty" of champions. On the college level (and yes, the universities do provide the "minor leagues" that the NFL draws on... that's one thing I mean by the too-tight integration of athletics and academics) have a much older tradition, much more pagentry....... and is a crazy--quilt of disorganized organization that has created so much controversy that it has come to the attention of Congressional committees.... no really, I'm serious, it really has...)
No no no - the Worldchampionship of carrying women (price is the weight of the woman in beer!) or killing as many flies as you can in one blow with your hands (the record is 12!).

Or Australian football - no body armour!
or Irish Hurling - the tougher version of hockey (in older days, games usually ended up in a big battle)
or Afgan Polo - almost everything is allowed, even hitting the opponent with your polostick

now those a real sports!
-------------------------------------------------------
Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings -- they did it by killing all those who opposed them.
I really have nothing against soccer or those other world sports that are played. I even played soccer in my youth, long ago. The reason I believe, if some of my fellow countrymen want to add input please do, but a lot of those other more violent sports are taken and americanized for safety due to the nature of our laws and society. As stupid as it sometimes sounds that is how we are. We like everything safe with very little chance of death, even though death does come on occasion and injury very often, especially from football and hockey. I believe that may be the reasons why we do not have those sports across the atlantic.
So much for this thread staying on topic.

I think the biggest event was WW II for Canada as well. It helped give my country a sense of unity and pride that it lacked before that.
Not to be facetious, but aren't you overlooking the great social innovations that vastly changed the countries? You could argue that some legal events, like the Magna Carta, were watersheds bigger than any war. And some technological innovations like the cotton gin or steam power or even the TV vastly changed a country more than any war.
Legio XX
Dear Dutch members van het RLP,

just a question on this historic date about the off topic *) theme football - European Championship from a German Rat-member.Today our national teams again are meeting in an important game.

What do You do today, will You keep Your fingers crossed in support of the German Soccer National team . What do the football fans in this forum say, what is Your opinion about the difficult relationships between our nations since 1974 - I must admit that until 1988 (our lost semi-final, perhaps You remember: Koeman, a German jersey and Koeman's back) or 1990 (Frankie Rijkard playing lama again and again) most people in Germany did never at all realize what a traumatic event 1974 was for Your country and today for us it is always again surprising how very, very, very, very important it is for the Netherlands to kick Germany off a tournament (or to see them been kicked off - "Deutschland, Deutschland - alles ist vorbei").

As a long time soccer player (hobby teams) for me it is no problem to see the better win (of course, I hope it may be our's). Is it so that we only misinterpret You and it is only a great joke and that we are only too stupid to understand Your fine humour or is it so that we are still living in an post-war situation despite European Union - I was born long after 1945 as most people in this forum. I am curious to hear Your opinion.

Nevertheless - best wishes from Duitsland to Dutchland

Uwe

*) perhaps soccer is not so Off-topic, although it is only a fiction, but there is a very well written book by a soccer fan and Roman enthusiast like us - anybody read Claude Cueni's "Caesar's Druid"?

Edited by: Uwe Bahr at: 6/15/04 1:33 pm

Are the germans the dutch biggest rivals and vice versa. And when you talk about football, do you mean american football in europe, such as the amsterdam admirals, or so you mean football as in soccer, such as the amsterdam ajax.
THERE IS NO VICTORY WITHOUT DEFEAT, AND THERE IS NO DEFEAT WITHOUT VICTORY

the ranking so far:

Adidas: 10 points (5 teams)
Puma: 5 points (4 teams)
Umbro: 3 points (2 teams)
Hummel: 1 point (1 team)
Nike: 1 point (4 teams)
@ Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus:
American Football is more about throwing and catching, not much about kicking, so it shouldn't be called football at all.
Yeah, well, grenadiers shouldn't have been called grenadiers when the no longer carried grenades and lancers shouldn't have been called lancers when they stopped riding horses and fusiers should have changed their names when the fusil went out of style.
These things happen
I agree with you that football is better used for soccer, but that is not how it is. A lot of names for things don't make sense.
THERE IS NO VICTORY WITHOUT DEFEAT, AND THERE IS NO DEFEAT WITHOUT VICTORY
