Imperial Rome Museum Opening: after action report - Paulus Flaminius - 09-24-2006

AVETE ROMANI

Greetings from LEGIO XI CLAVDIA PIA FIDELIS in Atlanta, Georgia. I hope this letter finds your troops hale and hearty.

We just completed duty at the opening of the Imperial Rome Exhibit at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. What a blast.

I was impressed by the artifacts in the display. Many I was well familiar with from Peter Connolly books etc. Comrades in Texas will be most pleased when it arrives in Houston. Great recruiting opportunity. I met more than 5 Latin teachers a few history teachers, several homeschool groups, plus another handful of brawny raw recruits.

One hint: I've found that just handing out my Roman Reenactor card is not enough. Folks take it and lose it. So now I make it a point, when they ask for more info, to hand them the card then ask for their name, number and email address so I can capture their info, and be able to follow up.

Now I have a bunch of contacts for school & church presentation plus new recruits that I can periodically prompt to think about bring ROMA to life in their life and classrooms.

SALVE

That's excellent advice! Maybe like a sign up sheet? Sometimes I've found out that handing out flyers, etc is a good thing, though, and I'll keep on doing it, but one person I met later said they'd wanted to call back, but had lost the flyer...so you're right. Now just don't lose the list, heh, and you'll be ok.

Good job! Looking forward to seeing the exhibit in Houston in Feb. We're doing pretty much the same sorts of things, Legion military exhibit, Celt military exhibit, Roman and Celt civilian exhibit, and gladiator fights, with the possibility of some needled felt Roman v. Celt fighting, too. Hard to know until we have all the bodies in the room what we can do.

Feb 24, 2007 anybody in or coming to the Central Texas or Houston area who's interested in attending/participating please log on to http://www.theromanway.org/about.htm and send a contact note to that effect; somebody will be back with you with info. All Romans, Celts, and gladiators welcomed! Hope to meet some of you there!

This was a very nice exhibit! It was very nice to see some of the items that most of us have only seen in booksor TV. It was kind of small but had alot of nice items. They had coins, pottery, statues big and small, jewerly, and surgical tools.

We even had gladitorial bouts! There were four of them:
Myrmillo vs. Thrax victor Myrmillo
Myrmillo vs. Hoplamocus Victor Hoplamocus
Secutor vs. Retiarius Victor Retiarius
1 Essedari vs. 2 Essedari Victor 2 Essedari

Re: Imperial Rome Exhibit Opens World Tour in Atlanta - M. Demetrius - 09-24-2006

How did you outfit your Essedari? Originally, according to Gladiators and Caesars they were Celt chariot fighters. Now I know you don't have three Celt chariots, of course, but how did you make it work? Always interested in new ideas and equipment?

It's not surprising that the two of them beat the one, though. Be sure to bring this info, and any photos to the gladiator group, plz.

Re: Imperial Rome Exhibit Opens World Tour in Atlanta - jbd_29349 - 09-24-2006

Sorry should have made that more clear. It was Essederi #1 vs. Essederi #2, and not one Essederi vs. two Essederi.

SORRY! :?

Exhibit - Paulus Flaminius - 09-24-2006

Gargantua from Galilee, as I witnessed, took too many blows to the head during the gladiator bouts to be relied on regarding the immensity of the display. I was wowed by the quality and QUANTITY of items displayed. The thing went on and on. It was reported that Gargantua took a wrong turn at the VOMITORIA and ended up in the Dinosaur Room with his own kind thus missing several halls of treasure.

Get some rest ol' pal.

Ok, ok, but HOW did you make the Essedari look? What kind of weapons, shields, greaves, that sort of thing. I'm curious, is all...it's not a trick question.

Help a brother out, ok? Big Grin

Re: Imperial Rome Exhibit Opens World Tour in Atlanta - jbd_29349 - 09-24-2006

Don't get me wrong the exhibit very impressive and I walked away mistified, I just expected it to be bigger.

Besides the surgeon side I was fine that na na na na nothing was p p p p permanent.

Very nice exhibition. Legio XI guys looked quite sharp, and the gladiators put up a great show. The decisions though about life or death were made to the contrary to what I was screaming. Well, nevermind. [/list]

Re: Imperial Rome Exhibit Opens World Tour in Atlanta - Lepidina - 09-28-2006

Way cool exhibit!! For some odd reason, I thought the Atlanta exhibit was opening in January. Oh well.

So are there now 3 Roman exhibits touring around? The ones I know about are:

- The big Pompeii exhibit that started out in Ottawa and is now in Japan
- The Mobile, Alabama exhibit opening in January
- The Atlanta exhibit which just opened.

There is also in "In Stabiano" exhibit which was at the Smithsonian that I've seen around at other places.

Lastly, do you have contact info for the gladiators? I'd like to tell them to get their butts up to Roman Days. They came a few years ago but I haven't seen them since.

Thanks!

Re: Imperial Rome Exhibit Opens World Tour in Atlanta - M. CVRIVS ALEXANDER - 09-28-2006

The "In Stabiano" exhibit is now also in Atlanta - in the Carlos Museum, Emory University, until October 22nd.

Unless I've missed something, the Pompeii event is the same one coming to Mobile in Jan/Feb, and the Atlanta exhibit "Imperial Rome" is coming to Houston, TX in late Feb.

Many of us from all around (as everybody knows by now) are planning to attend the Mobile event first weekend in Feb 07 as Romans, gladiators and Celts, and some of us from further West are planning to make the Houston event on Feb 24 07 in the same way.

Anyone interested in the Mobile event should contact Rusty Meyers [email protected] ; those interested in attending at Houston should contact [email protected] or [email protected] for more info, etc.
