Roman Legion Exhibition at Regensburg - caiusbeerquitius - 09-09-2015

Hi all! I curated an exhibition about the Roman Legion. You may visit it in the Historisches Museum Regensburg. The exhibition shows several life-size Illustrations by Graham Sumner, a number of 1:72 dioramas, including a full-size legion, a full size colors equitata and a full size ala milliaria. There are also several stations where you can try out aspects of the life of Roman legionaries.

Check out the Facebook-site for numerous pictures:

Roman Legion Exhibition at Regensburg - Gunthamund Hasding - 09-10-2015

Christian

until when will be this open? I will probably be in Regensburg next year end of march and once more in summer (June July) for couple of hours.

Roman Legion Exhibition at Regensburg - agrimensor - 09-10-2015

Cristian is this a permanent expo or is it going to travel?

Roman Legion Exhibition at Regensburg - caiusbeerquitius - 09-10-2015

Hi! This will be up until early February 2016. It can be rented afterwards by museums and schools etc.
The whole exhibition is designed to travel, all vitrines and displays follow certain measurements and can be disassembled and put up again easily. =) The exhibition may also be customized, i.e. set up in a smaller scale etc. For more info visit http://mules-of-marius.com
Cheers! Christian

I love that picture of the cavalry coming over the hill!

Hopefully I will get to see the display soon.

Graham.

Excellent effort! I'm sure it will only get better with time.

Can I make a recommendation? When I am able I always include pieces of raw iron ore, UK tin ore, copper, blue zinc ore, lead (coated with shellac) and other bits of the raw materials that were used to make military and civilian objects during this period of time when I set up an activity at the Penn Museum. It really gets kids, and their teachers, who may not be interested in history, but are interested in science to get involved. An added benefit is the relatively low cost and easy availability of all these items, and kids can handle them without fear of breakage. Explaining what is "bronze" and how it is created seems to be interesting to most people, same with "brass." It can also be a starting point for discussions on why the Romans expanded to some places, southern England for tin, and not to others in their efforts to build an empire.

If you get a chance to go and see this, seize it! It is truly excellent and puts many a museum to shame. I saw it in Regensburg along with other Limes 2015 delegates (having drooled over the fortress fortifications earlier). It was really popular with all who saw it and reminded me how far we have come from the days of my first Limes Congress in 1983 when any sort of project like this, or Legio VIII Augusta's presentation & demonstration on the contubernium, would have been inconceivable.
