Gladiator Symposium - wolle1301 - 12-19-2012

Hello there,

for many years it has been an old tradition of fencers to travel around, meet and learn from each other. For ancient combat sport such a tradition does not exist. I think this is a pity.

I would like to suggest to you the idea of meeting, roughly at the end of summer 2013, just as event season for the groups that visit museums or markets, ends. It would be a weekend or even something like Thursday-Sunday, to have a few days, to share ideas, teach each other techniques and tell stories.

This would certainly create a corps spirit and would help those new in the hobby. But also veterans of the arena would be able to recruit new group members or teach novices in the ways of a gladiator. Or the can challenge each other to show of there skills in the sand.

I hope to find others, that are interested in such an event. We would have to find a suitable location with good accesabilitiy for attendants with a long way, enough accomodation and of course something that is worth being called arena. Which means basically a lot of sand, houses and not too far from an airport or major train station.

If you are interested in such an event be it attending or helping to organize, please feel free to comment or contact me via PM. If you have questions, please ask them in the forum so everybody can participate and help answer them.

If you like the idea of traveling around to learn new skills and advance in your fencing, you might want to take a look at:
http://www.facebook.com/Swordsurfing
http://www.indiegogo.com/Swordsurfing

It is an amitious project, that tries to connect all Historic European Fencers and eases the organisational hassle fencers face, if they want to visit other groups. It would be just awesome, if we could get all gladiator groups into this system and show that not only medieval fencing is important in Europe.

Thank you for reading. I hope you like my ideas and help support their transfer to reality.

(Please note; swordsurfing is not a project of me myself, but a friend. I simply try to support him whereever I can, because I love the idea behind it.)

Gladiator Symposium - Vindex - 12-31-2012

Hi - missed your first post on this. I think it's a very good idea and worthy of support.

May I assume this would be a private event, not open to the public? If so, it would perhaps make finding a venue easier as there won't be quite so many insurance problems to be overcome.

As for an arena...a sand riding school or even a bull ring may fit the bill; which country are you in? Interested in helping if I can :-)

I'm answering on behalf of my comrade who had the idea of this symposium. We are from Germany and the event - which is a private event indeed - will take place in Germany as well. Thorsten might have found a location already but is still checking. Thanks for your help anyway.
