Ok...I'll try to load mine again but it seems a bit pointless after Pauls patera fest; except they're II Aug so I thought Kevin might like them...(but then again, the thought it the XX VV were at Usk not the Second)

You know...with all of the pictures people have of different Roman artifacts, perhaps we can suggest a general Roman equipment database to go along with the grave steles and helmets?

May I ask a related (but possibly OT) question? Is it usual for re-enactors to acquire a generic patera, or do you try to recreate one close to the period that you are re-enacting? This is not a trick question: I'm just curious. :?

Well some of us use the Deepeeka one, which Ade (and I think others) sell, tinned with food quality tin, but I have seen a few others. I am not sure how many sellers ensure the yare safe tinned apart from Ade and Christian K.
I know Jurjen uses one from Erik Konig...I think he is safe tinned too.
I use the deepeeka one because it is big enough to cook quite a bit in, I thought the measurements of the ones Erik was diplaying sounded small(but nice) I imagine he would make a copy of most any.
Len Morgan makes them too.
So they are not all identical DB, but some of use the same one!

Errr if I could find something different I would use it.
Cast/beaten copper, brass or bronze....I would go for tinning though as I use everything I have. I also have the standard Deepeeka but I would like something defined as first century. That said I would love all sorts of stuff 1st Century.

I think we are all in the same "boat" so to speak on the availability of a repro/useable or not/ patera of the first cent type. One thing i have noticed are the large number of rams head handles found and dated on military sites occupied by Legio II ie Hod Hill and Exeter from the first cent. Was this design prevelent in the legions or did different legions go for different styles? or was it litterally grab what you can.
As Magnus mentioned earlier in the thread,a pictorial database of these items would be ideal. I did find this site but no pics...http://www.archdiggers.co.uk/Patera_Database_All.aspx

If they are commonly found on sites associated with Leg II Augusta, I wonder if the rams' heads might actually be intended to be capricorn heads, that being a totem animal of that legion.

I think most re-enactors probably simply think 'patera' rather than 'first/second/third century etc. patera'. It may be one area we need to take more care over.

Found this re. first century CERAMIC patera.....does show that "figure of 8" shape even on these.
