Making Lorica Segmentata - 2biggij - 06-10-2011

As good quality and accurate Lorica Segmentata is expensive, i would like to make my own set. I am having trouble finding a place to buy the rivits and hinges and such. I have found 2 online places so far that sell kits with all peices needed, but they are both in Europe. Does anyone know any good places to buy kits in America, or should i just go to the hardware store?

You could do worse than have a look at Matthew Amt's page on making segmentata.

Where in America are you? Check out the list of suppliers for raw materials on the link that Crispvs posted...and read that site about a dozen times before you start making anything....it will help. 8)

I am in Central Ohio, and i found a set of complete fittings on soul of the warrior, for $75 though, is this a good price, seems kinda pricey for only being a coupla hinges and a couple hundred rivets. Also, does this set only fit a certain style of Segmentata ( Newstead, CAmbridge...etc)?

I have a correction, this fittings set on soul of the warrior only comes with the hinges, buckles and bosses and loops, no rivets, 46 pieces total, is it easier to cut your own pieces out of copper or brass sheets?

well, cutting your own hinges etc isn't that hard. At least I think that making a segmentata is a good starters job, although I highly recommend to make a paper mock-up first. Just get some sheet metal of scrap and try one and you'll see what you're able to.

Re: Making Lorica Segmentata - Magnus - 06-10-2011

Joseph, you need to read the link Crispvs posted. Seriously...that way you will know what type of hinges are appropriate for a Corbridge/Newstead/Kalkriese segmentata. You will also have an idea of how long it takes to make a single lobate hinge.

Second, the lobate hinges are not proper barrel-types. I have ordered this kit and didn't end up using them because they will eventually fail.

Making the brasswork for a seggie is VERY time consuming...

Have you considered starting with an easier project first, to get some familiarity with the techniques you will need for making your own armour? Perhaps a belt...
