Where\'s the best place to get a 3rd/4th Century Spatha - Vindex - 09-22-2010

Any recommendations gratefully received...

Swords I have looked at range from 24 inch blade to a 27 inch blade. As I'll be on a horse the 27 inch blade appeals, but is it authentic? And if it is, a reference would be great.

Thanking you all in advance.

All seem earlier to me - which one is supposed to be 3rd-4th c.?

Both seem to be from the third century, at least according to Christian Miks...

Would the Alaris not match the requirement...but there is only an illustration and not a picture of the made sword.

I have the decurion, and while it is acceptable as a second-third cent sword, I also get the impression from Miks it
was a blade types seen into the later period. I am going to stretch it at least until I get a pattern welded spatha...gulp...my heating bill out the window, again too Moi!

But there are some other places to go (but also not that cheap), like Erik Konig or Pierpaolo Siercovich (Munazio Planco here on RAT).

I'll share my racing tips with you then GJC!

I am justifying the non heating oil spend on the saddle in that, with this current cold spell the oil would all be used by Jan/Feb anyway when it is going to get REALLY cold...LOL!

Schorsch has comparatively decent prices. He knows a lot about archaeology as well, so his reconstructions are very close to the originals, also using historically accurate steel iron alloys. His works also copy the small "mistakes" the originals normally have, leaving the customer with an exact copy and an individual piece. Smile

Nice, but still nearly 2K euros for a spatha of the Illerup style...and I was trying to beat the 3.5% hike in VAT too..not this year methinks! I'll have to get another weapon to terrorise my horse with Big Grin

You can easily terrorise him with Iacula, which are much cheaper!
