CHESTER Archaeology event - Graham Sumner - 07-22-2009

On Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th Chester Amphitheatre hosted an Archaeology weekend. Simon Scarrow was meant to open it but sadly could not attend due to a leg injury. Events were also cancelled on the Sunday due to heavy rain, a familiar story!

Nevertheless public attendance on both days was high and I managed to take a number of photographs of the Gladiatorial display by the Deva Roman Tours group which Robert will post for me when he returns from holiday.

It was nice to finally meet up with some fellow RATers from Ireland. I hope they enjoyed the visit!
Graham.

Hi Graham,

Great to see you again. Like you say it was rather disappointing with the weather on the Sunday. I was gutted Mr Scarrow couldn't attend. I spoke to him at 2pm on the Friday and by 4pm he'd had a fall on his recently repaired knee and unfortunately had to cancel.

Thankfully, the event we put on on the Saturday made up for the disappoinments, especially the Gladiating!! Seen as though 3 of the lads had never been in the arena before, i personally thought we put on a good show.

Can't wait to see your pictures (all 2000 of them!)

Brutus.

Hopefully the waranty is good? Hope they sort him out, knees are problematic.

Salvete Omnes!

On behalf of the Hibernian Vexilia - Leprechaunus Maximus - I would like to give a big thanks to all for giving us such a warm welcome. Great to meet up with our legionary brothers from Deva and our old friends from Legio VIII MGV. I don't know if anybody noticed but Nick Backhouse made a replica of a stove from Pompeii, a fantastic piece of work and thanks again to Nick for doing such a super job. It was a fantastic week end for me on many levels but especially meeting up and having a laugh with some old friends.

One of the highlights for me was meeting Graham Sumner who I must say is a very generous man with both his time and advice. Graham, I've started reading your new book - Roman Military Dress, published by The History Press, ISBN 978 07524 4576 2, and I must say I'm most impressed but there is one glaring omission - the tunic worn by the Hibernian legionaries, see here

It was great seeing you and the lads again mate, the craic was grand and the 3am insults to the local chavs was a definite highlight of the weekend. Thanks for taking part and helping to make the event the success it was.
