Charitable Late Roman Soldier walk for Breast Cancer - Cheyenne - 07-31-2008

Hi All,

Thought I'd make people aware of a great event that my friend is doing in aid of Breast Cancer Research. Anthony will be walking the full length of Hadrians wall dressed in my authentic Late 4th/Early 5th Century Roman infantry clothing.. including lamellar armour, shield, francisca, spear and all camp kit. He will be eating Soldiers rations from the period and sleeping in a dog tent - he will also be undertaking this in a pair of boots kindly donated by Adrian of Armamentaria and other kit provided by our group Comitatus .. he is doing this over 5 days and it will be in october - so not the most kindly of seasons...

We took some pictures last night in my garden to be applied to the just giving website..

He has promised to join our group for next season! Smile

He is aiming to raise £2000 for the charity ...

You can visit his webspace on the just giving site @

Cheers!! Smile

If anyone

Hi Claire, just letting you know I edited the link above to the correct one

A very worthy endeavour, and I'll be contributing.

Quote of the month has to be, "Gonna make that wall my bitch!"

Re: Charitable Late Roman Soldier walk for Breast Cancer - Salvianus - 09-29-2008

Anthony has drafted his itinerary for the march, which I thought might be of interest to others who are planning to walk the wall, or indeed who have already:

Day 1, Wallsend to Heddon-on-Wall. 15 miles mainly flat walking through built up areas.

Day 2, Heddon-0n-Wall to Chollerford. 15 miles of glorious Northumbrian countryside.

Day 3, Chollerford to Gilsland. 21 miles and perhaps the most difficult part of the walk. Up hill and down dale with little in the way of civilisation or lavatories until Gilsland.

Day 4, Gilsland to Crosby. 15 miles of thinking why am i doing this? missing a decent cotes du rhone, and yearning to watch Emmerdale.

Day 5, Crosby to Bowness-on-Solway. 20 mile finale skirting the north of Carlisle and testing the tidal Solway Firth. I will need to consult the tidal chart for the last few miles.

No doubt folk may have opinions on the best stops and I'm sure Anthony won't mind any sage advice Big Grin

This is a good cause and no mean challenge. I did 18 miles on the Wall last Saturday as part of the Comitatus Wall Walk. The soles of my feet were very sore afterwards. The thought of doing a similar walk day after day, doesn't appeal. So please give Anthony financial backing to make his endeavour truly worthwhile.

Anthony gave an interview to BBC Radio Manchester today:

It must be the chemotherapy talking, 'cos I'm usually quite shy of making direct appeals, but if ever there was a cause I'd personally urge you to back, it's this one.

You can see 'Antonius' talking about his light marching kit and rations, including a cracking pair of Armamentaria fell boots (they're kit, not rations  ) on BBC TV at:

Mmm... period gloves debate, anyone?

Re: Charitable Late Roman Soldier walk for Breast Cancer - John Conyard - 10-19-2008

I just got a message from Claire letting us know how Anthony got on.

The walk went well. He did it in the alloted time and
surprisingly, the weather was very good for him... he only saw about 2
hours of rain during the whole five days, but the cold did get to
him. I know he did do a video diary which was shown as part of the BBC news in the North West of England. The kit was good in general but I do know that the boots cut his feet to shreds and he had to add another 3 miles on to the walk to see a doctor in Brampton. He will give a more detailed description in due course.

Re: Charitable Late Roman Soldier walk for Breast Cancer - Salvianus - 11-22-2008

Antony's march was no walk in the park: authentic 4th century kit and rations is always a challenge on overnighters - new boots gave the sort of trouble any walker will know well. He tackled the loneliness of the long distance hiker with great fortitude.

On the front line of cancer treatment, I have been staggered to discover how rapidly recent research is transforming both quality of life and prognosis for one in three of us. When I've recovered from my own chemotherapy, God willing I hope to be back up to health in a year year to emulate his great achievement Big Grin

Comitatus will be doing a street collection in aid of Cancer Research UK with Antonius today in York, based from the Roman Bathhouse Museum, St. Sampsons Square and proceeding to the Three Legged Mare near Bootham Bar for 8pm.
