Re: Massive gathering in Germania in 2009 - madoc - 03-12-2008

Is there any update ?

It is probably safe to say that The Vicus ( www.vicus.org.uk ) would be interested in coming, as a group, and possibly travelling on our own euro .....

We've not booked our "group" holiday for 2009 yet (Jersey this year).... Big Grin

Re: Massive gathering in Germania in 2009 - Octavianvs - 04-14-2008

Do we have confirmed dates for 2009 yet? and is Marle going to be during this same time ( 2009 )?
Thanks - Octavianus

Legio XI CPF (Belgium) will be present at the Kalkriese event.

We are still unsure if we will participate in the battle as legionarries or as a contingent of archers. We will soon have 14 Roman archers in our group (most of them western style Romans but all with scythian composite bows).

That's quite a line-up you can present!

Indeed, it will be great fun I think to be able to do some 'massed' volleys. Most of the soldiers in my group like archery a lot. I was going to order a bow for myself and asked the others if anyone would be interested in one. I started a bit of an 'avalanche' I think...

Re: Massive gathering in Germania in 2009 - Ebusitanus - 06-11-2008

Any group that would like to attend needs to contact the museum itself?

yes - Ulfwin - 07-02-2008

Yes, the museum is the organizer. It works a bit tricky, because they did write to the groups who had a recommendation by someone else and asked them to write their appliances. The deadline is mid of July 2008, say in two weeks.

For Germanics the way to get a recommendation is officially contact with the German Comitatus. For Romans you should get in contact with the Milites Bedenses ( www.milites-bedenses.de ). But the museum is the one to apply to. They have the power. It can still be, that all our Comitatus hassle was for nothing, if they decide to engage a Chinese stuntmen group or whatever.

The museum wants to make a show with about 100 Germanic warriors and 150 to 200 Romans. Different to the Kalkrieses of former years the action will take place outside of the tiny dug out area. They want some camp life and civilian life's presentation, a big concentrated Roman camp and in fact a scenery where Germans ambush the Romans. War will not be a huge mock battle, but cut in several moderated scenes. They also would like to see some interacting, wossname, play scenes founded on the stories about Arminius and Varus tradited by the ancient historians.

That is the actual situation. It may change, but not too much. Altogether it is not so bad, I think.

Cheers,

Stefan

It's not the three-day march that we could have offered them, culminating in a huge ambush scene on the Sunday. But still, if it happens like you described, it's not bad.

Re: Massive gathering in Germania in 2009 - Quintius Clavus - 07-11-2008

What about American reenactors being able to participate? I, for one, am planning to get over to Germany in 2009 and would prefer to do it as part of a reenactment event at Kalkriese, etc.

I had the good fortune (due to willingness to drive long distance) to meet Tony Clunn when he visited the United States a few years back. The Clades Variana has fascinated me from an early age (read my first account of it at age 9).

Re: Massive gathering in Germania in 2009 - Amalric - 07-13-2008

I will hopefully be attending this event next year. I've been working all summer to save up for it. I think it would be awesome if I was able to participate as a reenactor over there, but I would still be psyched just to be there. I hope the museum contacts some American groups and invites them over, because I have heard a lot of people interested in participating.

They call it "Varuswoche" - Week of Varus ( ). It´s from 11th to 14th of June 2009.

Varus Disaster - Re-enectment June 2009 - David H. Blain - 07-27-2008

Well, I certainly hope that Stefan is incorrect and that July 15th was not the cut-off date for re-enactors to sign up for kalkriese-varusschlacht (June 2009).

I sent my email out to the museum today and will keep my fingers crossed.
