Anthony R. Birley (1937-2020) - D B Campbell - 12-21-2020

Another giant of our subject has gone: Tony Birley, author of works too numerous to list, but amongst which RAT members will certainly know The Government of Roman Britain (2005) and the biographies of the emperors Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, and Septimius Severus.

I only knew Tony for 20 years. We began a frequent correspondence after he kindly gave me a name-check in his Tacitus: Agricola and Germany (1999, p. x), but I regret that we never managed to meet in person. Nevertheless, I feel privileged that he kindly read my edition of Hyginus prior to publication, and generously wrote a glowing endorsement of my little book about the Ninth Legion. Roman scholarship will be all the poorer for his absence.
