Quote:Our First Minister has suggested (scroll down to World Cup) that Scots should support Trinidad or Angola!
I expect he's supporting Paraguay this afternoon.
Trinidad & Tobago even have a player named Scotland.
I think a team that is either sponsored by adidas or puma should win - that's good for our economy. Normaly I would say Italy wins in the end, but I'm not sure anymore after those scandals in their league.

Belgium is absent
I'm supporting Italy and Ukraine. Italy I'm supporting for many years now, Ukraine is mostly because of Shevshenko and Rebrov (and I forget many of them).
Trinidad&Tobago surprised me the most up to now, with ten against a much stronger Sweden, yet they resisted 8)

Well, in both the case of Australia & Trinidad-Tobago, the cause is clear: Dutch coaches!

My worst nightmare came true: thanks to the WC Football, I have lost my pub, De Brakke Grond in Amsterdam. A nice quiet place where they served good beer, where you could study and have a conversation, and where the barmaid knew your name. Our friend Jasper once delivered a lecture over there. For an earlier eulogy: [url:8370gs8u]http://www.livius.org/a/netherlands/amsterdam-brakke_grond/amsterdam-brakke_grond.html
It has a new management. Nothing shocking, but yesterday, the pub was dressed like a Dutch football supporter and produced just as much many decibels. If this is an indication of the new style of the pub, I am afraid that they have lost their regular customers. As a Dutch poet once said: Everything of value is defenseless.

Yes, Sweden can't play football
No seriously, all the players from Trinidad&Tobago play in the English or Scottish Second League (or what's it called?), so they're pretty good. Sweden had a strong opponent.

Uhm, it didn't really need enormous powers of prediction to get the winner and loser of that match correct.

Well I watched Italy-Ghana. Result: 2-0
I enjoyed parts in the first half, but overall the italian team makes me suffer too much! Ultimately I hated it.
The italian team played well for a short spell and finally made a goal, but then they closed up and played for the minimal-effort result. It a cultural thing. Italians have always done this. But its foolishly risky and people like me suffer to the final whistle blow. This time a Ghana defense player made a foolish error and the italians managed to make the second goal. But it was an accident!

*snicker*
I don't mind the US loosing. What kills me is that they played like a bunch of IDIOTS!!! Half the guys out on the field play for Eurpean teams. They should have at least TRIED to get a goal or two. *sigh*
Now the Aussies on the other hand - Go SOCCEROOS!!

Still, I would like an Italian World Championship. Although, not for valid reasons. If the 2.5% additional economic growth that accompagnies a World Champion's title would go to Italy, it is best for the European economy as a whole. My other reason is that I once met Francesco Totti and his fiancée Hillary, who live in a house near the apartment I rented in Casalpalocco. I thought he was a really nice fellow without airs. And yes, his girlfriend is gorgeous.
And talking about Totti: Italians always tell jokes about him, because he is supposed to be stupid. I think he is in fact quite intelligent, although he is not an intellectual. Anyhow, he started to collect them and made two little books with Barzellette su Totti. The proceeds are for the Teleassistenza del Commune di Roma. So, if you are looking for a nice way to improve your Italian:[url:158li0yr]http://www.internetbookshop.it/ser/serpge.asp?Type=ExactAuthor&Search=Totti+Francesco.
